A Side Saddle Actress

Wow!  Jumping at you is the actress Joan Woodbury.  Joan was born on December 15, 1917 in Los Angeles, CA. She studied for seven years in a convent, then studied dance and graduated from Hollywood High School. 
 
In 1937, Joan appeared in her first credited film, Chan on Broadway. She also played the heroine in many western movies with the famous cowboy actors: Roy Rogers, Johnny Mack Brown and Boyd Rogers. In 1945 she starred in Brenda Starr, Reporter, and in 1956 she had a role in The Ten Commandments. During her career she appeared in eighty-one films.
 
In addition to starring in eighty-one films, Joan was a multi-talented woman who led a very busy life. She wrote her own songs and poetry and sang in some of her films. In many of her movies she was able to show off her dancing skills.  One of her first movie roles was that of a Latin dancer, as Joan had an interest in Mexican folk dance. But her first love was ballet. She was the premiere ballerina in 1936 at the Corps de Ballet in Hollywood. 
 
Joan designed her own clothes and spoke five languages. She was also a champion fencer. Joan was also a very accomplished horsewoman who loved to show horses. This photograph was taken on August 19, 1937. On vacations she loved to go trail riding. Joan died on February 22, 1989.
